Description |
Sepia photograph of J. Bergen's Shoe Repair Shop in 1913. The building would be demlished in April 1916. Notation on the back of the photograph from the Waukesha Freeman, November 3, 1944: "The dilapidated frame and brick bulidings shown in the picture were located in Waukesha on West Broadway at the present site of the Metropolitan Store. The old frame house was built around 1856 and in later years was occupied by a shoe repair shop and a second-hand store and the adjoining stone building housed a shoe repair shop. These landmarks were torn down in 1916 and a stone building occupied by Perkins hardware store was erected. The Metropolitan Store succeeded the Perkins hardware store on this site. Posters to the left of the picture advertise the appearance of the A. H. Wilson stock company in the city. The delivery truck is probably a two cylinder "International" of 1910 vintage. The small boy posing in the picture is now about 35 years old. Although his name is not known, he may still be a resident of Waukesha." |
